As we move through the golden heart of August, the world begins to shift. The light softens, the air deepens, and nature invites us into one of its oldest teachings: harvest.
This sacred season isn’t just about what we gather from the land—it’s about the inner harvest too. What has ripened in you? What seeds have grown into strength, truth, or transformation?
Let’s explore this together through the lens of shamanic spirituality, Celtic tradition, and personal reflection.
🌞 The First Harvest: A Time of Fulfilment & Preparation
In the Northern Hemisphere, early August signals the first harvest. In Celtic tradition, this is marked by Lammas or Lughnasadh—a cross-quarter fire festival celebrated on August 1st. It honours Lugh, a solar deity of skill, light, and abundance.
People once gathered to bake bread from the first grains. They would offer thanks to the land. They celebrated community through feasts and rituals.
Lammas is not just an ancient celebration. It’s a mirror. It reminds us to pause and acknowledge what is full. We should also recognize what is finished and what is still becoming.
🪶 A Personal Note: My Lammas Journey
Several years ago, I sat in a field at dusk during Lammas. I held a small loaf of bread I had baked with mugwort and rosemary. I foraged these plants myself. I lit a candle, sang an old chant I barely remembered, and felt something ancient stir in my chest.
I wasn’t just offering bread to the land. I was offering gratitude to the version of me who had made it through another cycle. That moment rooted me deeper into the sacred rhythm of the Earth than any book or ceremony ever had.
🔥 The Shamanic Wheel of the South
In many shamanic traditions, this season corresponds to the South of the Medicine Wheel—a place of:
- Vitality & full expression
- Creative fire
- Gratitude & fruition
- Acknowledging helpers, guides, and unseen support
This is the time to honour not only what you’ve harvested. It is also the time to honour what helped it grow: your community, your ancestors, your own resilience.
✨ Ritual: Build Your Harvest Altar
Here’s a beautiful way to engage with the energy of this season.
🕯️ Create a simple altar:
- Add fruits, herbs, or flowers you’ve harvested—or symbols of what has ripened in your life.
- Include a loaf of bread (store-bought is fine) or a candle to represent the inner fire.
- Write a list of everything you’re grateful for and place it beneath the altar.
🙏 Sit quietly. Offer a prayer, a song, a moment of silence. Let this be your personal Lammas—alive, honest, and full of presence.
